Theatre director, producer, activist.
A theatre director and producer with a passion for pushing social boundaries through performing arts.
Fonnyta is drawn to realistic theatre and scripts with dark undertones. Her motivation in directing is often driven by the desire to highlight differing perspectives in the increasingly polarized Indonesian society, combat conformism, and challenge the conservative mindset.
She is a fan of human complexities and behaviours and believes that any stage production should give the audience a glimpse of the real struggles of being human while at the same time providing them a space to escape.
Fonnyta is one of the few female theater directors in Indonesia.
Fonnyta began exploring theater skills in 2013 with the Jakarta Players theater community.
From 2014 to 2016 Fonyta joined the Jakarta Performing Arts Community as a volunteer. She explored all aspects of making amateur community theater productions by being an actor, assistant producer, stage manager, ticketing staff, and finally producer and stage director in various performances.
In 2017, Fonnyta launched her first art-activism project by producing and directing a Broadway-licensed musical “West Side Story”. The production involved a total of 100 casts and crews of volunteers. It was staged to speak out against racial and ethnic discrimination in Jakarta.
The West Side Story production was a huge financial success & established JPAC as the first amateur community theater to stage internationally licensed productions.
In the last 4 years, Fonnyta has directed and led the production of 3 licensed musicals from Broadway and 1 licensed drama show from Concord Theatricals, USA in Jakarta, Indonesia and managed to garner a total audience of 5,150 people.
Within 4 years JPAC membership increased from 500 to 3000 people
Fonnyta is a key player in JPAC and one of the most prolific directors of amateur theater performances in Jakarta. Fonnyta also played a major role in increasing the interest in the modern theater among youth in Jakarta.
Fonnyta uses her productions to pave a pathway for youth and women to become creative artists in modern theater by involving a total of 228 youths, 68 of whom are women.
In 2021 Fonnyta initiated an experiential theater training program (a series of online training mixed with hands-on practice to experience being involved in an actual production) titled JPACAdemy which successfully trained 20 youths aged 15 - 24 years old.
In 2021, Fonnyta received a scholarship to pursue a Master's Degree in theatre directing at the world's top 5 Performing Arts schools - The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, UK , for 2022/2023
In early 2022, Fonnyta led a project of a performing arts capacity-building initiative called Triple Threat Academy, a collaboration with the US Embassy, the Arts Envoy Initiative, and The Canales Project. The project provides intensive training by US professional artists for young emerging Indonesian artists, in three categories: Artisty, Advocacy & Entrepreneurship.
